AI agents that run your business

Framer and Willo both use AI to get something live from a prompt. They are not exactly solving the same problem.

Framer calls itself an AI design agent and AI website builder. You work on a visual canvas. Agents generate and refine pages in place. A CMS, hosting, SEO, analytics, localization, and publishing sit in the same product. Designers, marketers, agencies, and startups use it for marketing sites, landing pages, blogs, portfolios, and resource hubs. Official customer stories on Framer’s site include teams such as Perplexity, DoorDash, NBA, Dribbble, Zapier, Microsoft, Huel, Mixpanel, and Cal.com.

Willo is an AI business builder. You describe an idea. Agents research the market, create a brand, deploy a website to your GitHub repo, prepare Stripe, and keep working on content, marketing, and operations. Chat is free. Credits pay for work that ships.

If you want a designed marketing site you will keep editing on a Figma-like canvas, Framer is usually the better fit. If you want the business to exist — research, brand, site, payments, and weekly agent work — Willo is built for that job.

Framer is a website (and CMS) platform you design and publish. Willo is an AI team that builds your website from a prompt, then helps start and run the business while you stay in control of the important decisions.

What is Framer?

Framer is a hosted website design and publishing platform. The current homepage positions it as: go from idea to launch with an agent that designs and builds on the canvas, with every change visible, editable, and under your control. Hosting, security, analytics, CMS, and SEO are built in.

  • Agents — AI that updates pages, styles sections, works with CMS, and keeps changes on the canvas. You can type / for actions and @ to mention pages, collections, styles, or assets. Models listed on the agents page include Sonnet, Opus, and GPT variants.
  • AI — generate pages from a prompt or screenshot, then refine by conversation or by hand.
  • CMS — collections, fields, detail pages, on-page editing, CSV import, localization.
  • Hosting — global CDN, SSL, custom domains, image optimization, publishing.
  • Collaboration — editors, content editors, viewers, branching, staging (plan-dependent).
  • External agents — connect tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex so AI can run outside Framer’s credit meter (listed as preview / free during preview on the pricing page).

Framer is not a full ecommerce platform in the Shopify or Wix Stores sense, and it is not an AI that researches a market or opens Stripe for a new company.

How Framer works

  1. Start free on a Framer subdomain. Design on the canvas, with or without AI.
  2. Agents generate or edit pages. You keep pixel-level control of layers.
  3. Add a CMS for repeating content (blog posts, team, docs).
  4. Publish on Framer hosting. Paid plans remove branding and connect a custom domain.
  5. Optionally add localization, Convert (A/B tests / funnels), or Advanced Hosting.

Official help is explicit that Framer does not offer HTML export for self-hosting, because published sites depend on platform backend services (pre-rendering, image resizing, SSR, CDN). A separate portability article says published output is standard HTML/CSS/JS and CMS data can be exported via plugins as CSV or JSON. Those two official pages do not fully agree on how complete a “download and host anywhere” workflow is. If leaving Framer matters, confirm the current export path in-product before you commit.

What is Willo?

Willo is an AI business builder for founders, operators, solopreneurs, agencies, and local businesses. You describe a business or idea. Willo stands up an AI team and the infrastructure to run it.

The built-in team is seven agents: CEO, Product, Research, Marketing, Content, Support, and Finance. Chat is always free. Credits are spent on work that ships.

Backend functionality isn't limited to paid users. It's provisioned on every plan, including Free. Paid tiers expand what's available with the Autonomous Growth Engine, Stripe Connect, email sending and contacts, and analytics, while higher plans bring custom domains, team access, business transfers, Shopify integration, more compute, and other advanced capabilities.

AI capabilities

Framer’s AI is site-centric. Agents design pages, write copy and SEO metadata, organize CMS collections, audit links and accessibility, and translate locales. Typical costs on the base model are about 300 credits to generate a landing page, 150 to make a page responsive, 100 for a large edit, and 50 for a small edit. You can pick lighter or heavier models. Marking a result as bad is said to refund credits.

Willo’s AI is business-centric. Agents research competitors, lock positioning, ship the site, draft campaigns, and queue weekly work. The Growth Engine on paid plans runs plan → execute → reflect using traffic and revenue data. Custom agents are listed as coming soon on Growth and Scale.

Website, hosting, and lock-in

Framer is excellent inside Framer: publish in seconds, global hosting, image optimization, staging on Pro. Official help says you cannot export a working site as standalone HTML for self-hosting. You can connect your own domain. Advanced Hosting (Pro add-on, $200/month on the pricing page) adds reverse-proxy / multi-origin routing. CMS content can be exported as CSV/JSON through plugins.

Willo deploys to your GitHub and includes hosting. That is closer to “I can take this with me” than a canvas-only SaaS. Willo is not trying to match Framer’s visual editor or CMS collections.

Ecommerce, payments, and growth

Framer is used for brand and product marketing sites. Commerce is typically an embed, a form, or a link out to Shopify or another checkout — not a first-party 50,000-SKU store.

Willo includes Stripe Connect on paid plans, creates products and checkout pages, and states it takes no platform cut. Shopify storefronts start on Builder. Email sending and a weekly Growth Engine are part of paid plans.

How the bills actually compare

  • Framer Basic $10 is a cheap professional site if one person designs it and stays inside 30 pages / 2 CMS collections / 1,000 AI credits.
  • Framer Pro $30 + $20 per extra editor is still a site bill. Add Convert ($50), locales ($20 each), or Advanced Hosting ($200) and it becomes a marketing-stack bill.
  • Willo Starter $25 includes backend, Growth Engine, and Stripe with 0% platform fee — but not Framer’s canvas or CMS collections.
  • Willo Builder $49 vs a Framer Pro site plus two extra editors ($30 + $40 = $70): different jobs. Framer buys design collaboration. Willo buys more businesses, Shopify, and team invites on a GitHub-backed stack.

Willo is usually cheaper if the alternative is Framer plus a strategist, copywriter, and someone to keep operating the company.

Ease of use and onboarding

Framer feels familiar if you know Figma: layers, frames, auto-layout, breakpoints. Agents speed a first draft. You still design, publish, and market. On G2, Framer was 4.5 / 5 from 144 reviews on August 2026 (75% five-star, 18% four-star). Reviewers often praise the canvas and “design and publish in one place.” Complaints in that small sample include pricing that scales quickly, monthly vs annual cost, and difficulty exporting.

Who is Framer best for?

  • Designers and marketers who want a high-control marketing site
  • Agencies shipping client landing pages and brand sites
  • Startups that already have an offer and need a fast, designed web presence
  • Teams that want CMS + staging + SEO in one canvas
  • People comfortable staying on Framer hosting

Framer’s own stories (Zapier, Perplexity, DoorDash, Microsoft) are this profile: existing brands, design-led sites.

Who is Willo best for?

  • Founders and operators who have an idea but not a product or marketing team
  • Solopreneurs who need research, brand, site, payments, and follow-up work
  • Agencies that want to stand up a client business and later transfer it
  • People who want the site on their GitHub and Stripe without a platform cut
  • Users who prefer one credit pool across several businesses

Pros and cons

Framer pros

  • Excellent visual canvas; AI output stays editable
  • Built-in hosting, CMS, SEO, analytics, and publish flow
  • Agents plus optional external AI tools (Claude, Cursor, Codex)
  • Staging and branching on Pro
  • Low entry price for a single designed site (Basic $10)
  • Strong G2 average (4.5/5) among website-builder reviewers
  • Yearly plans can include a free .com

Framer cons

  • Official help: no HTML export for self-hosting
  • You still do research, offer design, and ongoing business operations
  • Not a native full commerce or app backend
  • Credits, seats, locales, Convert, and Advanced Hosting stack the bill
  • Free plan is for trying, not a custom-domain business site
  • Refund policy on the public page is limited to EU/Turkey 14-day rule
  • Some G2 reviewers cite lock-in and unclear scaling costs

Willo pros

  • Idea → research, brand, site, roadmap, Stripe without a design tool first
  • Named agents plus a weekly Growth Engine on paid plans
  • 0% platform fee on Stripe Connect
  • GitHub-backed site; cancel-and-keep model
  • One account plan and shared credits across businesses
  • Unlimited free chat

Willo cons

  • Not a Figma-like visual CMS
  • You still steer strategy and review output

When to choose Framer

Choose Framer when the bottleneck is getting a designed, hosted marketing site live and you want to keep editing it yourself (or with a designer).

Typical cases:

  • A startup landing page or brand site where motion and layout matter
  • A blog or docs hub on Framer CMS
  • An agency delivering client marketing sites
  • You already know the offer and just need the site

When to choose Willo

Typical cases:

  • You can describe the offer but cannot stand up research, brand, site, and ops
  • You want agents to keep drafting content and planning the week
  • You want the repo and the revenue economics
  • You may later transfer the property to a client

Frequently asked questions

Can Framer start a business from scratch?

It can generate a website from a prompt and attach a CMS. It does not research your market, write a living company roadmap, or run a weekly growth loop the way Willo describes. You still operate the business.

Can I export my Framer site?

Framer help says no HTML export for self-hosting. A portability article says you can download published HTML/CSS/JS and export CMS data as CSV/JSON. Confirm in-product which of those workflows is actually available to you. Willo deploys to your GitHub repo.

Conclusion

Framer is a strong choice when you want a designed website — often with a CMS, staging, and on-canvas AI — on Framer’s hosting. Agents make the first draft faster. The tradeoff is staying on Framer’s infrastructure and doing the business work yourself.

Willo is a better choice when you need the business itself: research, brand, marketing, website, payments, and an AI team that keeps working after launch.

If you have an idea and no stack behind it, start free on Willo — no credit card required. If you already know you want a Framer site, start free on Framer instead.
