A business has one custom domain setup at a time. Changing it means swapping the old setup for the new one, and Willo does that in one step.

## Before you start

Know what the swap does:

- **If the current domain is live, the site stops answering on it straight away.** Visitors and links that use the old domain get nothing from the moment the swap runs.
- **The new domain starts from the beginning.** It needs its own DNS records, then propagation and HTTPS, which takes minutes to hours.
- Your `bywillo.ai` address keeps working throughout, so the site is never fully offline.

If the old domain is only mistyped and never went live, none of this matters: nothing was serving on it.

## Swap the domain

Ask Willo in chat, naming the new domain: "replace my domain with example.co" or "I typed exampel.com by mistake, it should be example.com".

Willo describes what will happen and asks you to confirm. After you say yes it removes the old setup and connects the new one together. Then follow steps 3 to 5 of [Connect a custom domain](https://www.willo.ai/docs/domains/connect-a-custom-domain): add the new records at your registrar and wait for HTTPS.

You only need DNS access for the new domain. You don't have to remove anything from the old domain's DNS for the swap to work, though you can tidy it up later.

## Remove a custom domain

To go back to just your `bywillo.ai` address, remove the domain in **Settings → Custom Domain**. The site stops answering on that domain, and its official address returns to `bywillo.ai` on the next build.

## After the change

- The site's official address (the one search engines and link previews use) moves to the new domain once it is live. See [Your site's official address](https://www.willo.ai/docs/domains/your-sites-address).
- Text that names your old domain, such as a footer line, a contact email address or a blog post, does not change by itself. Ask Willo to find and update it.
- If the old domain had visitors or search traffic, consider keeping it registered. Forwarding it to the new domain is set up at your registrar, not in Willo.

Only an editor, admin or owner of the business can change its domain.
